Both exams earn you the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, and most states accept either one. The PTCE, from PTCB, is the older and more widely requested exam, especially by hospitals. The ExCPT, from NHA, is common in retail pharmacy and some training programs. If your state or target employer names one, take that one. If not, the PTCE is the safer default.

What's on both exams
Both cover medications (brand and generic names, drug classes, interactions), federal pharmacy law (DEA schedules and forms), patient safety and quality, and order entry and processing, including prescription math. Studying for one prepares you for the other.

Do employers prefer the PTCE or ExCPT?
